Back 2 School: Oral Health Tips that Make the Grade

You’ve graduated high school, chosen your college, and met your roommate: adulthood has officially begun! Before you start your wonderful college journey over the next 4 years, you should take care of a few important things - like your teeth! Here are 5 oral health tips you should consider before heading off to school:

See your dentist before you leave.

The last thing you want on your first day is a dental emergency. Make sure you have a scheduled teeth cleaning and get those pearly whites in tip-top shape before classes.

Don’t forget your hygiene essentials.

Packing up for college can be overwhelming. Between all the boxes and suitcases, make sure there is room for your oral hygiene essentials like toothpaste, a new toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash. Storing your toothbrush correctly is also very important. Simply throwing it into your luggage can attract bacteria to grow on the bristles, so make sure to store it in a clean container. If you need any of those items, ask us at your next appointment!

Drink plenty of water and limit sugary foods.

This may seem like a tall order before you’ve had the taste of freedom, but sugary foods can cause plaque buildup, cavities, and tooth decay. All the things you don’t want to bring with you to college. Limit the damage by cutting back on sugar and drinking plenty of water after indulging in those dorm room snacks. Water will help wash away some of the lingering sugars, protecting your teeth.

Don’t stress out!

We all know that school can be challenging, but this should also be the best time of your life! Pay attention to your stress level and don’t put things in your mouth like pencils and pens. Chewing on hard objects when you’re anxious or stressed can damage your teeth. You can also invest in a nightguard to wear in your sleep to keep from grinding your teeth. This is very important because you don’t want to chip or crack a tooth over your next term paper.
