Start a Strong Dental Routine Early

Many of our lifelong habits begin when we’re children, and dental habits are no different! And just like those other habits, bad dental routines can be difficult to break. Start your kids off for a lifetime of success by encouraging strong dental practices early.

Make brushing your teeth fun!

Brushing your teeth twice a day is critical to oral health, no matter your age. And just because baby teeth are temporary doesn’t mean they don’t need the same level of care as permanent teeth. Teach kids to enjoy this necessary part of the day by using age-appropriate toothpaste and toothbrushes – though when choosing a type of children’s toothpaste, check fluoride content and pick a flavor they enjoy – and turn the two-minute-long routine into a fun game or song.

Eat a balanced diet.

Kids love sugary food and drinks – and in moderation, that’s perfectly fine. But as parents, we’re in charge of helping our kids eat balanced diets, and a healthy menu can help keep their whole body in tip-top shape. Fruits, vegetables, lean meats, dairy products, and lots of water all provide essential nutrients that keep teeth and gums strong. These nutrients also help maintain enamel, regulate saliva production, and neutralize acids in the mouth.

Set a good example.

Children learn by example, and as their parents or guardians you are the first person they look to. Let them watch you brush your teeth, floss, use mouthwash, and practice other teeth-cleaning activities. Not only will they learn proper technique, but they will also follow your example in diligent oral health maintenance. Plus, those Christmas card photos will feature pearly white smiles all around this year!

Protect their teeth.

As any exhausted parent will tell you, kids are full of energy! A great way to expend that energy and teach them new skills is to introduce them to sports. However, make sure that you are protecting their head, teeth, and other vulnerable parts while they play, especially in high-contact sports. Invest in a high-quality mouthguard and, should they suffer an injury to their mouth while playing, call your dentist immediately for emergency care.

Visit the dentist regularly from an early age.

Though Guffee Dental is not strictly a pediatric dentist, we are proud to serve entire families and patients of all ages, including kids! It’s important to start taking your child to the dentist as soon as their teeth come in to make sure there are no problems and keep their teeth healthy and clean from day one. Our expert dentists and hygienists have years of experience tending young teeth, and we work hard to ensure a positive experience for little ones.

When it comes to your children’s oral health, don’t take any chances! Establishing strong habits, a regular schedule of dental check-ups, and preventative care are all key components to a life of healthy teeth and gums. Set your kids up for success when you schedule an appointment with the caring team at Guffee Dental in Anderson, SC.
